1000 Books Before Kindergarten Initiative

Keep track of your child's reading goals on your smartphone or tablet with the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten app for iPhone and Android!

Preliteracy skills are essential to scholastic success!

This initiative aims to ensure that all area children entering Kindergarten have acquired such skills through exposure to books and a language-rich early childhood experience.

According to the National Early Literacy Panel, it has become increasingly important for children entering kindergarten to already possess six preliteracy skills:

  • alphabet knowledge
  • phonological awareness
  • rapid automatic naming of letter or digits
  • rapid automatic naming of object or colors
  • letter writing
  • phonological memory

Helping a child acquire these skills is easy - read with the every day!


The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten initiative supports the acquisition of preliteracy skills and puts books into the hands and homes of children.

All pre-K children, 0-5 years of age, may register for this FREE program at the Ripon Public Library.

Read to your child whenever, wherever and as frequently as possible!

Indicate the number of books read and tell us about your favorites.

At every 100 books read juncture, come to the library for a prize.

Throughout the journey from 0 - 1,000 books, at least three books will be awarded.

All who complete the program will be treated to a graduation ceremony in conjunction with the Ripon Area School District.
