Six simplified pre-literacy skills to enjoy often with your pre-reader!

During the months of June & July, pick up a check list at the library - then, each time you and your child engage in one of the pre-literacy skill-boosters listed below, give yourselves credit by marking an "x" next to the appropriate skill. At the end of each month, if you have at least 5 “Xs” in each category, return to the library for a rubber ducky prize!

• I KNOW LETTERS! Share alphabet books.
• I HEAR WORDS! Recite nursery rhymes & add actions.
• I SEE WORDS! During daily activities, point to and talk about items - outdoors, at the park, at the grocery, etc.
• I KNOW WORDS! Share a nonfiction book and talk about the pictures.
• I CAN TELL A STORY! Child helps recire a familiar part in a book or nursery rhyme.
• I LIKE BOOKS! Let child hold the book and show how to turn the pages.

Things to keep in mind:

• Pre-literacy skills are developed well before a child reaches school-age.
• It’s never too soon to start nurturing the development of these skills.

The good news is that talking, reading, singing, and creating a print-rich environment are all fun, easy, and inexpensive ways to ensure that your child will be ready to read!
