A long history of early childhood research shows that reading to preschool children is crucial to their development of preliteracy skills, and subsequently success in school. The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten initiative aims to ensure that area children entering Kindergarten have acquired such skills through exposure to books and a language-rich early childhood experience.
